Catching Resume Fraud: Some Recommended Tips

I think we have had several postings (e.g., here) on resume fraud, but given the apparent interest in the topic, another posting seemed appropriate. This time, my focus is on tips for catching resume fraud, based on a nicely written column from Fisher & Phillips. They cite a large study in 2003 indicating that about 52% of resumes had some "discrepancies." Here are some of the suggested tips for catching resume fraud:

1. Carefully read the resume before you interview;

2. Ask open ended questions and make sure the applicant talks about 80% of the time (note: too many interviewers do 80% of the talking -- don't!)

3. Conduct background checks;

4. Check references.

I would add another tip, which is, look for potential discrepancies and follow up on them.

I have provided the basics of the article; go here to read the details!

I have a problem. Due to the type of jobs, quantity of jobs, and personality traits I have your comment worries me. My resume basically is true to the point that I am experienced in all aspects of the job I am performing. I need a job but people are biased. I once tried to write an honest resume which ended up being 6 pages because of all the "Temp Jobs" I've had. This failed. I reverted to my custom resume to target specific jobs and landed a job within a week. If I were allow managers to bias me I would be homeless.
